Welcome!
I’m Wil, an applied linguist who uses corpus methods to analyze discourse. In plain English, that means I run statistical tests on large amounts of text—sometimes millions of words!—and use my results to uncover the subtle rules and techniques hidden in those words.
In today’s world, there isn’t just one way to write. Knowing when to apply the right techniques can be the difference between a good writer and a great one. That’s why I write in a variety of registers, genres, and styles: to take any writing project from okay to outstanding.

I’m an applied linguist, which means I use my knowledge of language to tackle real-world problems. I’ve studied everything from scholarly writing to politics and theatre!
I’ve been trained as a sociolinguist and discourse analyst, which means I’m always picking up on the little signs we give that say: “This message belongs here.”
Whether you’re writing a work wiki or a Facebook post, it’s critical to understand who you’re writing for—and what they expect to read. Tone, diction, page layout, and, yes, even emojis all have their place. Applied linguists like are trained to recognize the systems built into our communication patterns and use them as efficiently as possible.
Curious? Look at my work—or drop me a line!
